How long do you need at the Hofburg?

Updated September 18, 2026

Quick answer

Allow about two hours for the palace museum route: the Imperial Apartments, the Sisi Museum and the Silver Collection. Adding the Imperial Treasury takes it to three or four. Seeing the whole complex, including the Lipizzaners and the Albertina, is a full day.

Two hours is the figure the booking partner puts on the entry ticket, and it matches the shape of the route: the silver on the ground floor, then the Sisi Museum in the Stephan apartments, and the imperial apartments above. It is enough to read the labels rather than skim them, and it is why last admission sits an hour before closing.

The palace route: about two hours

You take the Silver Collection first, climb to the Sisi Museum, and finish in the apartments of Franz Joseph and Elisabeth. With the audio guide running, most people take a little under two hours. The museum clears at 17:00 and the apartments at 17:30, so an arrival at 16:00 is the point at which the visit becomes a march.

Adding the Treasury: three to four hours

The Imperial Treasury sits in the Swiss Court, five minutes' walk across the courtyards from the apartments' exit, and holds the crown of the Holy Roman Empire and the Holy Lance. An hour is a fair allowance and 90 minutes is not wasted. Remember it closes on Tuesdays, and that it admits visitors only until 30 minutes before closing.

The whole complex: a day, and a plan

A full Hofburg day works in this order: the palace route in the morning when it is quietest, the Treasury before lunch, the State Hall or the Neue Burg museums in the early afternoon, and the Albertina late, since it stays open to 21:00 on Wednesdays and Fridays. The Spanish Riding School has to be booked around, not slotted in: performances and training sessions run to their own calendar.

If you only have an hour

Skip the museums and walk. The courtyards, Heldenplatz and the Burggarten cost nothing and give you the scale of the place, which the rooms inside do not. If you would rather be inside, the Treasury at EUR 16 gives a shorter, denser visit than the palace route.
