How long do you need at the Sisi Museum and the Imperial Apartments?
Updated September 18, 2026
Quick answer
About two hours for the full route, which is one ticket covering three collections: the Sisi Museum, the Imperial Apartments and the Silver Collection. Ninety minutes is possible if you move; three hours is easy if you listen to all of the audio guide. The hard limit is the 16:30 last admission.
The confusion behind this question is that "the Sisi Museum" is not a museum you visit on its own. The EUR 20 day ticket puts you on a single one-way route through three separate collections, and you cannot do one without walking the others.
The three parts, and what each takes
Allow roughly this, at an unhurried pace with the audio guide running.
- The Silver Collection — 30 to 40 minutes — Around 135,000 objects from the imperial household: the table service, the kitchens and the logistics of feeding a court. It comes first on the route and most people walk it too fast.
- The Sisi Museum — 40 to 50 minutes — Open since 2004 in Elisabeth's own apartments, designed by Rolf Langenfass around her poetry. This is the part with an argument to make and the part worth slowing down for.
- The Imperial Apartments — 40 to 50 minutes — The working and residential rooms of Franz Joseph and Elisabeth in the Reichskanzleitrakt and the Amalienburg, including his study, his iron bed and her exercise room.
The audio guide is why it takes two hours
It is included free in the ticket price and the operator publishes it in fourteen named languages: Chinese, German, English, French, Italian, Japanese, Dutch, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Czech, Hungarian and Ukrainian. Without it, the route is a sequence of furnished rooms and you will be through in an hour. With it, the rooms have people in them and the running time roughly doubles. That is the whole difference between a disappointing visit and a good one, and it costs nothing. One caveat from the operator's own page, read on 18 September 2026: the audio guides were listed as "currently not available on the website due to a revision", so the detail of what is issued on the day may change. Handsets are issued at the entrance; you do not need your own headphones.
The clock that actually governs the visit
Not the length of the route — the closing sequence. The palace is open daily and on public holidays from 09:00 to 17:30. Last admission and the ticket office close at 16:30. The Sisi Museum clears at 17:00 and the Imperial Apartments at 17:30. So a 16:30 arrival gives you the two hours the route needs only if you do not linger, and the Sisi Museum — the part you came for — shuts thirty minutes before the rest. Arriving after about 15:30 means choosing what to skip. The best arrival time is 09:00, when it opens. The route is one-way and the crowd bunches; being ahead of it is worth more than any other planning decision here.
If you have less time
One hour: do the route without the audio guide and accept that you are looking rather than learning. Prioritise the Sisi Museum over the Silver Collection. Ninety minutes: take the guide, skip nothing, and do not stop to read the wall panels as well. If you have less than an hour, do not buy the ticket. Walk the courtyards instead — they are free, they take fifteen minutes, and they will tell you more about the building than a rushed hour indoors. Our [free at the Hofburg page](/qa/is-the-hofburg-free) sets out what that covers.
Two hours here, or four at the Hofburg
This page answers the palace route only. Almost everyone who allows two hours for "the Hofburg" is underestimating the complex, because six other operators sell tickets inside it. Add the Imperial Treasury, four minutes away across the Swiss Court, and you are at three or four hours. Add the Albertina, the Neue Burg museums or the Spanish Riding School and it is a day. Our [how long at the Hofburg page](/qa/how-long-do-you-need-at-the-hofburg) plans the whole complex; this one is just the ticket most people buy. One dated caveat: from 6 October to 18 November 2026 the museum section of the Sisi Museum is closed for refurbishment, hours run 10:00 to 16:30 and standard tickets are 25% cheaper. In that window the route is shorter and so is the day.
