The Albertina in Vienna, a neoclassical palace museum raised on the old Augustinian Bastion

How much time do you need at the Albertina museum?

Updated September 18, 2026

Quick answer

About 90 minutes covers the Habsburg state rooms and one major temporary exhibition. Allow two to three hours if two big shows are running, which they often are, because one EUR 20.90 ticket covers all of them and there is no supplement to make you choose.

The Albertina is the hardest museum at the Hofburg to give a single number for, because what is inside changes several times a year. The building is a constant; the programme is not.

What you are timing

Three things, and the ticket covers all of them with no separate exhibition charge.

  • The state rooms — 25 to 35 minutes — It is a Habsburg palace, the residence of Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen, and the historic rooms are part of the visit. This is the part that connects it to the rest of the Hofburg.
  • A major temporary exhibition — 45 to 75 minutes — Two or three run at once, usually mixing a historic name with something contemporary, and they change on staggered schedules.
  • The permanent collection — 30 to 45 minutes — Built on works on paper, with modern painting acquired in the 2000s. What is hanging rotates.

Why the number moves

Because the programme does. When we read the museum's own site on 18 September 2026 it was promoting KAWS, Vasarely, Adrian, Picasso and Bacon — and that sentence will be out of date within months, which is exactly the point. Two big shows running simultaneously turns a 90-minute visit into three hours without you deciding to. Check the current programme before you go and you will know which kind of afternoon you are booking. The one thing that does not vary: there is no separate exhibition ticket. At a museum that charged eight euros extra for the headline show, you would ration your time. Here you do not have to, which is why people stay longer than they planned.

The Dürer question, and the time it wastes

Works on paper cannot be permanently displayed — light damages them — so the Albertina's most famous holdings, including Dürer's Young Hare, spend most of their lives in storage and appear in rotation. Visitors who arrive determined to find a specific drawing can spend forty minutes searching for something that is not in the building. If a particular work is your reason for going, confirm it is on display before you buy a ticket. A labelled high-quality facsimile is often shown instead. That check takes two minutes and is the single best use of time associated with this museum.

Opening hours and the two late evenings

Daily 10:00 to 18:00, and until 21:00 on Wednesdays and Fridays. Those two evenings are the quietest hours in any museum in central Vienna, and they solve the timing problem completely: an exhibition with a queue at two in the afternoon is empty at eight. If your schedule can flex, this is the museum to move to the evening. It also makes the Albertina the natural end of a Hofburg day rather than a competitor for the same hours. Imperial Apartments at nine, the Treasury before lunch, and the Albertina from six.

If you are also doing Albertina Modern

Budget separately and do not try to do both in an afternoon. Albertina Modern is a different museum in the Künstlerhaus on Karlsplatz, about fifteen minutes away, with its own EUR 17.90 admission and its own programme — allow 60 to 90 minutes there on top. There is no two-house ticket; the combo at EUR 29.90 covers all three Albertina locations including Klosterneuburg, outside the city. Our [comparison page](/compare/albertina-vs-albertina-modern) works through whether that pays.

Frequently asked questions

How much time do you need at the Albertina?

About 90 minutes for the state rooms and one major exhibition, or two to three hours if two big shows are running. One ticket covers everything with no supplement.

When is the Albertina least busy?

Wednesday and Friday evenings, when it stays open until 21:00. Those are the quietest museum hours in central Vienna.

Do I need extra time for the temporary exhibition?

Yes — and it is included in the EUR 20.90 admission, so there is no reason to skip it. Allow 45 to 75 minutes per major show.

Can I do the Albertina and Albertina Modern in one afternoon?

Not comfortably. They are different buildings about fifteen minutes apart, and Albertina Modern needs 60 to 90 minutes of its own.
