The Hofburg in Winter

Updated September 18, 2026

Quick answer

Winter is the quiet, cheap end of the Hofburg's year. The palace route keeps its daily 09:00 to 17:30 hours, the courtyards are cold and empty, and the two exceptions are the Christmas market weeks and the ball season.

What winter is actually like here

January averages a high of 3C and a low of -3C, with about nine days of rain or snow in the month. The museums are warm and the distances between them are not: the walk from the palace route to the Treasury crosses two open courtyards. Daylight is the real constraint. Last admission is 16:30 year-round, and in December that is close to dusk.

The Christmas market weeks

From late November the squares around the complex fill with markets, and the quiet argument for winter stops applying. Michaelerplatz and the Ring are busiest in the late afternoon and early evening, which overlaps with exactly the hours when the museums are emptying. Plan the indoor half of the day early and the market half late.

The ball season

From January the palace works as a ballroom: the Redoutensaele and the Festsaal host balls through the season, which is a different Hofburg from the museum one and mostly invisible to day visitors. Tickets are sold by the ball organisers rather than the palace, and dress codes are strict.

Why it is the cheapest time

Not through discounts but through availability: winter is when a walk-up ticket carries little risk, when the Treasury is quiet enough to stand still in front of the crown, and when the Albertina's Wednesday and Friday evenings feel like a private view. The one winter closure worth noting is the Treasury's maintenance week, 16 to 27 February 2026.

What to bring in Winter, November to February

  • ✓ A proper coat: the courtyards are exposed
  • ✓ Shoes for wet stone
  • ✓ Layers, because the apartments are warm
