Best Time to Visit the Hofburg

Updated September 18, 2026

Quick answer

Late spring and early autumn are the best compromise: mild weather, everything open, and none of the summer crush. Winter is cheap and quiet apart from the Christmas market weeks, and the palace route is open every day of the year.

The short answer by season

May, June, September and early October give you long days and open buildings without August's queues. July and August are hot and busy, and the Spanish Riding School's performance calendar thins out in summer. November to February is the quiet, cheap end of the year: cold, short days, and the palace route open daily regardless.

What closes, and when

The complex does not run to one timetable, which catches people out more than the weather does. The Imperial Treasury closes on Tuesdays year-round and for a maintenance week from 16 to 27 February 2026. The Weltmuseum closes on Mondays. The palace museum route opens every day, including public holidays.

  • Tuesdays — Imperial Treasury closed; palace route open
  • Mondays — Weltmuseum Wien closed
  • 16-27 February 2026 — Imperial Treasury closed for maintenance
  • 6 October to 18 November 2026 — Sisi Museum section closed, hours 10:00-16:30, tickets 25% cheaper

The autumn 2026 exception

This year has a wrinkle worth planning around. From 6 October to 18 November the museum section of the Sisi Museum is closed for the final phase of its refurbishment. Hours shorten to 10:00 to 16:30 and standard tickets drop 25%, to EUR 15. If you want the apartments, the silver and a cheaper ticket, this is a good window. If you came for Sisi, it is the wrong one.

Time of day beats time of year

Whatever the month, the first hour after opening is the quietest and the last hour before the 16:30 cutoff is the most rushed. Book the earliest slot you will realistically make, and leave the Albertina for a Wednesday or Friday evening, when it stays open until 21:00.

What to bring in Year round, month by month

  • ✓ Layers: the apartments are warm and the courtyards are not
  • ✓ Shoes for stone floors and a lot of standing
  • ✓ A small bag: the cloakroom takes the rest
