Spanish Riding School Guided Tour Tickets

4.7 7,788 reviews Activity provider: Spanische Hofreitschule

The only way into the Stallburg and the Winter Riding School when the horses are not working.

  • Duration55 minutes
  • LanguagesGerman, English

The Spanish Riding School's guided tour is a 55-minute walk through the buildings themselves: the Winter Riding School where the performances happen, the Stallburg where the stallions are stabled, and the summer riding school. It is the answer to a question a lot of visitors ask too late — can you see the Spanish Riding School without booking a performance? You can, it costs from EUR 24, and it runs on days when there is nothing in the calendar. It is also the single best-reviewed way into these rooms, with 7,788 ratings behind it.

What the tour shows

Three buildings in 55 minutes. The Winter Riding School is the hall everyone has seen photographs of: built between 1729 and 1735 to Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach's design for Charles VI, 55 metres long by 18 wide and 17 metres high, white with beige and light grey, and hung with the portrait of Charles VI above the royal box that every rider salutes before riding. The Stallburg is the other half of the visit and the more surprising one — Vienna's most significant Renaissance structure, and the stables where the stallions actually live. The tour also takes in the summer riding school. The operator's own listing calls it a look behind the scenes, and for once that phrase is accurate: these are working buildings, not exhibition spaces.

How it differs from a performance or the morning exercise

A performance is the finished programme with the airs above the ground, from EUR 26. The morning exercise is an hour of training in the same hall, from EUR 17. This tour is neither: it is the architecture and the institution, with a guide, and the horses are wherever their working day has put them. That is its advantage and its limit. The advantage is that it runs when nothing else does — including much of July and August, when the sixty-eight resident stallions are at the summer stables at Heldenberg for seven weeks and there is nothing to watch in the hall. The limit is that you should not book it expecting to see a Lipizzaner in motion.

Price and what it compares to

From EUR 24, which matches the from-price the school itself publishes for its English- and German-language guided tours. At that money it sits between the morning exercise and a performance, and it is the only one of the three that guarantees you get inside the Stallburg. The school also sells an architectural tour at EUR 26 for about 80 minutes, which trades the breadth of this one for a climb into the roof.

Languages, group size and booking

German and English, per the listing's tour-guide details. Booking is through the partner or the school; either way you exchange a mobile voucher for a physical ticket at the cashier's desk, and the operator states that tickets can be collected no earlier than one hour before the activity. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and reserve-now-pay-later is offered.

The restrictions, in full

This tour has more rules than anything else in the complex, and they are all on the listing.

  • No photography — Taking photos or videos is not permitted. Cameras and video recording are listed as not allowed.
  • No children under 3 — Children under the age of three are not allowed on guided tours.
  • Not wheelchair accessible — The operator states plainly that guided tours are not accessible by wheelchair.
  • No pets — Listed as not allowed.

  • Rated 4.8 out of 5 for the guide on the partner listing, the highest single score in its breakdown.
  • Value for money scores 4.5, lower than the guide score — consistent with a tour whose appeal depends on caring about the buildings.

  • Anyone whose main reason for coming is to see the Lipizzaners perform.
  • Wheelchair users — the operator states the tour is not accessible.
  • Families with a child under three, who are not admitted.
