State Hall Tickets and How to Visit
Updated October 2, 2026
The State Hall — the Prunksaal — is the baroque hall of the Austrian National Library, and it is inside the Hofburg at Josefsplatz. It is also the one major attraction here that neither the palace operator nor the booking partner sells. The library ticket is the library’s own.
What it is
A single enormous room, built in the 1720s as the imperial court library, with a frescoed ceiling, walnut shelving and Venetian globes at the centre. It holds Prince Eugene of Savoy’s library among its collections. People come for the room rather than the books, which is fair: it is one of the most photographed interiors in Vienna.
Buying a ticket
The library sells its own admission, separate from every other ticket at this address.
| Ticket | Price |
|---|---|
| Adult | EUR 12.00 |
| Reduced | EUR 10.00 |
| Senior | EUR 10.50 |
| Vienna City Card holder | EUR 10.50 |
| Under 19 | Free |
These are the library’s own figures, read on its admission-fees page at onb.ac.at on 2 October 2026. The adult ticket covers the State Hall only; the library’s other museums are priced separately.
The State Hall is included in both the Vienna PASS and the Vienna FLEXI Pass. The library’s own page grants pass holders one free admission, and the Vienna PASS lists the hall with fast-track entry past the ticket desk. With the FLEXI Pass it uses one of the sights you chose.
Opening hours
| Day | Hours |
|---|---|
| Monday | Closed October to May; 09:00 to 18:00 June to September |
| Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday | 09:00 to 18:00 |
| Thursday | 09:00 to 21:00 |
On 24 December the National Library’s museums close at 15:00; all other public holidays keep regular hours. There are no timed entry slots — you go in whenever you like within opening hours. Allow 30 to 60 minutes, and arrive at 09:00 if you want the hall quiet enough to photograph.
No booking-partner ticket covers the State Hall, so if you have no Vienna pass, budget for it separately.
Fitting it into a Hofburg day
The entrance is on Josefsplatz, the most complete baroque square in Vienna and about two minutes from the palace route’s exit. The hall is one room, so it is a short visit — the natural second or third stop on a day built around the Imperial Apartments and the Treasury.
If you want the palace ticket first, that is EUR 20 for an adult and covers the Imperial Apartments, the Sisi Museum and the Silver Collection.
