Do you need a ticket to enter the Hofburg?
Updated September 18, 2026
Quick answer
Not to walk in. The courtyards, Heldenplatz, Michaelerplatz and the gardens are public and free. You need a ticket for the museums inside: EUR 20 for the palace route, and separate tickets for the Treasury, the State Hall, the Spanish Riding School and the Albertina.
The confusion is reasonable, because the Hofburg is a quarter of the city rather than a building with a gate. You can cross it on your way to the Ring without paying anything, and most people do. The moment you want to be inside a room with something in it, you are buying a ticket from one of four operators who happen to share an address.
What you can see without paying
In der Burg and the Schweizerhof, the two main courtyards, are open ground, and so are Heldenplatz and Michaelerplatz at either end. The Burggarten and the Volksgarten are public parks. You can look into the Stallburg stables from Reitschulgasse, and stand at the back of the Burgkapelle for the Sunday mass the Vienna Boys' Choir sings, though a seat is ticketed.
What needs a ticket, and from whom
The palace museum route - Imperial Apartments, Sisi Museum, Silver Collection - is one EUR 20 ticket from the palace operator. The Imperial Treasury is EUR 16 online from the Kunsthistorisches Museum. The State Hall belongs to the Austrian National Library, the Spanish Riding School and the Albertina sell their own. None of them is included in the others, which is the single most useful thing to know before you arrive.
Do you have to book ahead?
The operator's answer is unambiguous: admission is only guaranteed with an online ticket for a booked time slot, and original tickets are sold online through imperialtickets.com. In practice that means booking ahead between June and September and around the Christmas markets, and turning up on the day in February with little risk. Groups of ten or more must reserve by email.
Frequently asked questions
Can you walk around the Hofburg for free?
Yes. The courtyards, the two squares and both gardens are public and cost nothing at any hour.
Do you need tickets for the Sisi Museum?
Yes, and the same ticket covers the Imperial Apartments and the Silver Collection. The operator's FAQ states one ticket is valid for all three zones.
Can I buy a ticket at the door?
There is a ticket office, but it closes at 16:30 and the operator only guarantees admission with an online ticket for a booked slot.
