Where should I buy Hofburg tickets?

Updated September 18, 2026

Quick answer

Either from the operator's own shop or from an established booking partner. The operator states on its own FAQ that original tickets are sold "exclusively at imperialtickets.com", and it also lists booking partners. What you should not do is buy from an unnamed resale site that appears above the official one in a search result.

This site is not the official seller and does not pretend to be. We list what each channel gives you and what it costs, so you can choose the one that suits your trip, and we say plainly where the operator's own shop is the better buy.

The official ticket office and what it sells

The Hofburg's museum operation — the Sisi Museum, Imperial Apartments and Silver Collection — is run by Schloss Schönbrunn Kultur- und Betriebsges.m.b.H., which sells online through its own shop and in person at the entrance under the Michaelerplatz dome. Its own FAQ is unambiguous about the online channel: original tickets are available "exclusively at imperialtickets.com". That shop sells the day ticket at EUR 20 adult, the day ticket with guided tour at EUR 25, and the Sisi Pass at EUR 60. Buying direct is always the lowest price for those three products.

Booking partners, and what they add

The large activity platforms resell the same admission, sometimes with an audio guide, a live guide or a combination of sights attached. What you are paying the difference for is convenience: one account for everything on your trip, free cancellation up to 24 hours before in most cases, reserve-now-pay-later, and a mobile voucher that works without a printer. If you are booking six things in Vienna and want one cancellation policy across all of them, that is a real service. If you are booking one museum and you know the date, it is a markup.

Buying at the door

Possible, and for much of the year straightforward. The ticket office at Michaelerplatz closes at 16:30, an hour before the museums do, and during the refurbishment window from 6 October to 18 November 2026 it closes at 16:00. Note that the Imperial Treasury, which is a different operator entirely, charges EUR 18 at the door against EUR 16 online — there the online saving is real money rather than a queue.

What a valid ticket looks like

A timed or dated admission issued in the name of the operator or of a named platform, with a scannable code. If you have bought a guided-tour product at the Spanish Riding School, expect to exchange a mobile voucher for a physical ticket at the cashier's desk, and note that the school states tickets can be collected no earlier than one hour before the activity. Keep the confirmation email; it is the only thing that proves what you paid for.

The traps

Three of them, in rough order of how often they catch people.

  • Lookalike resale sites — Domains built to resemble the operator's, bidding on its name in search ads and reselling the same EUR 20 ticket for considerably more. The operator's 'exclusively at imperialtickets.com' line exists because of them.
  • Buying the wrong Hofburg — The palace is not one ticket. A day ticket does not include the Imperial Treasury, the Albertina, the Weltmuseum, the State Hall or the Spanish Riding School — all separate operators inside the same complex.
  • Not checking the date — The Treasury is closed on Tuesdays and from 16 to 27 February 2026; the Weltmuseum is closed on Mondays; the Sisi Museum's museum section is closed from 6 October to 18 November 2026, when standard tickets are 25% cheaper. A non-refundable ticket bought for the wrong day is the most expensive mistake on this list.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official Hofburg ticket website?

Yes. The operator's FAQ states that original tickets are available exclusively at imperialtickets.com. This site is not the official seller.

Is it cheaper to buy at the door?

Not for the Imperial Treasury, where the door price is EUR 18 against EUR 16 online. For the palace day ticket the price is the same either way.

Do I need to book in advance?

Not usually, but a dated ticket protects you against a sold-out time slot in high season and against the ticket office closing at 16:30.

Can I use one ticket for the whole Hofburg?

No. The day ticket covers the Sisi Museum, Imperial Apartments and Silver Collection. Everything else in the complex is sold by a different operator.
