Is the Hofburg worth visiting?

Updated September 18, 2026

Quick answer

Yes — but decide what you mean by the Hofburg first. The EUR 20 day ticket covers the Imperial Apartments, the Sisi Museum and the Silver Collection, and that is about two hours well spent. The Imperial Treasury, at EUR 16 online, is the collection most visitors say they would not skip. Everything else is a separate ticket and a separate decision.

The question is asked so often because the palace is confusing from outside. It looks like one building and behaves like seven museums. Visitors who buy one ticket, walk two hours of furnished rooms and leave sometimes feel short-changed — and the reason is almost always that they saw the apartments and missed the crowns.

What the EUR 20 actually gets you

A single route through three collections, with a free audio guide in fourteen languages. The Imperial Apartments are the working rooms of Franz Joseph and Elisabeth: his study, the iron bed he slept on, her gymnastic equipment still in place. The Sisi Museum, open since 2004 in her own apartments and designed by Rolf Langenfass around her poetry, exists specifically to set the documented woman against the 1950s film version. The Silver Collection holds around 135,000 objects from the imperial household — the table service and the machinery of feeding a court. Two hours with the commentary. That is a fair evening's reading turned into a walk, and for most visitors it justifies the ticket on its own.

The part people regret missing

The Imperial Treasury, in the Swiss Court, on a completely separate ticket from a completely different operator. It holds the Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire, the coronation regalia, the Order of the Golden Fleece and the Holy Lance — a Carolingian spearhead that Henry the Fowler bought in 926 and carried into battle in 933. If you have an hour and EUR 16 spare, this is where they go. The recurring complaint in reviews of the palace is not that the apartments were dull; it is that people did not realise the crowns were a hundred metres away behind a different door. Adult admission is EUR 16 online or EUR 18 at the door, reduced EUR 12 and EUR 14, free for under-19s, and it is closed on Tuesdays.

Who leaves happy, and who does not

Worth it for anyone interested in the Habsburgs as people rather than as a style — the apartments are unusually personal for a state museum, and the Sisi Museum has a genuine argument to make. Worth it for anyone who wants regalia: the Treasury is one of the great collections in Europe. And worth it for a first trip to Vienna, because the complex is the reason the city looks the way it does. Less worth it if you are expecting Versailles. The Hofburg is not a single grand enfilade; it is eighteen wings built over seven centuries, and the state rooms on the day ticket are dignified rather than overwhelming. If unbroken baroque spectacle is what you are after, Schönbrunn does it better and our [comparison page](/compare/hofburg-vs-schonbrunn) sets out why. Also less worth it as a rush. Two hours is the floor for the day ticket, and the ticket office closes at 16:30, an hour before the museums do.

The free half nobody counts

Before deciding whether to pay, know what costs nothing. The courtyards are a public right of way, so you can walk from Michaelerplatz through the Swiss Court to Heldenplatz without a ticket. Heldenplatz, the Burggarten and the Volksgarten are open public space. The Augustinian Church on Josefsplatz, where Franz Joseph married Elisabeth in 1854, is free to enter and holds the hearts of 54 Habsburgs in the Loreto Chapel. And on a Sunday morning between September and June, standing room at the 9:15 mass in the palace chapel — sung by the Vienna Boys' Choir — is free, released at 8:30. An hour of that will tell you whether you want to buy anything at all.

One dated warning

From 6 October to 18 November 2026 the museum section of the Sisi Museum is closed for the final phase of its refurbishment. During that window hours run 10:00 to 16:30 with the ticket office closing at 16:00, and standard tickets are 25% cheaper — so an adult day ticket is EUR 15. The Imperial Apartments stay open and the Sisi Pass is excluded from the reduction. If your trip falls in that window, the honest answer changes: the palace route is still worth EUR 15, but the single strongest reason to buy it is partly shut. Consider putting the money into the Treasury instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Hofburg worth visiting?

Yes. The EUR 20 day ticket covers the Imperial Apartments, the Sisi Museum and the Silver Collection for about two hours, with a free audio guide in fourteen languages. Add the Imperial Treasury at EUR 16 online if you have an hour more.

Is the Hofburg or Schönbrunn better?

The Hofburg if you want the Habsburgs as people and a city-centre location with free courtyards. Schönbrunn if you want a single grand baroque palace with a park.

Can you see the Hofburg for free?

Parts of it. The courtyards are a public route, Heldenplatz and the gardens are open space, the Augustinian Church is free, and standing room at the Sunday chapel mass is free from 8:30 a.m.

What is the one thing not to miss?

The Imperial Treasury in the Swiss Court — the crowns, the regalia and the Holy Lance. It is a separate ticket and the thing visitors most often regret skipping.
